Job summary
The role of an Enhanced Porter is to work as part of a team to provide safe, competent and comprehensive support to all wards, departments and users of the service. Porters are responsible for transporting medical equipment, goods, pharmacy products, blood products and medical gases.
As a Porter the main part of the role is to undertake patient movement in a safe, dignified way to a national agreed response time, all tasks have a set priority and should be responded to within the agreed time frame.
As Porters we undertake the role of Security within the hospital, which includes locks, unlocks and area patrols to ensure everything is in order.
The post holder will be part of the violence and aggression team, as part of the team along with clinical colleagues to implement safeholding techniques from de-escalation to restraint.Gloucestershire Managed Services offer many opportunities for education and progression
The successful candidate will be required to complete a 7-9 day SIA course all paid for by Gloucestershire Managed Services unless you already hold a license.

Main duties of the job
Main Duties:
To move patients from the ward to the required destination in a safe, efficient manner, ensuring their dignity, wellbeing and safety is always maintained.
Timely transportation of patient notes and X-rays to and from medical records ensuring patient confidentiality is maintained at all times.
To observe at all times Trust and Departmental Health & Safety Policies and Procedures, to ensure the safety and security of patients, staff and visitors.
Working asd part of a team to provide safe, competent and comprehensive support to all wards, departments and users of the service.
To ensure deceased patients, both adult and paediatric, transferred by ambulance or undertakers are transferred with dignity and privacy and that their property is checked and logged efficiently and according to Trust

We are seeking an individual with good interpersonal skills which include but are not limited to empathy, active listening, emotional intelligence and clear communication skills. The individual will be required to work as part of a team to provide a service to the hospital.

To respond to emergency calls and medical incidents such as CPR, Lockdown, Fire Safety and site.
Transport bagged dirty linen and waste to the appropriate collection area regularly, adhering to Trust Health & Safety Regulations
To transport any goods, including equipment, medical records, specimens, pharmacy and pathology supplies to or from the ward as requested in a safe, efficient manner and be responsible for the security of such goods.
Taking responsibility for delivery of drugs, including controlled drugs, signing for controlled drugs, and delivery to Ward/Department relinquishing the Porter from responsibility upon arrival. Responsible for signing for medicines and controlled drugs.
As instructed by clinical staff, change medical gas cylinders, predominantly oxygen. Follow departmental procedures/guidance being mindful of the explosive/pressurised nature of medical gas cylinders. Report any concerns relating to the cylinder bottles and ensure safe, and secure storage of stock at all times
Support GMS facilities management team to deliver the key performance indicators for Portering and security service, thus ensuring compliance with the GHT contract.
Occasionally, you may be required to cross work within other departments across the GMS portfolio of services to undertake duties as requested by the senior nurse that can be considered appropriate by your Line Manager (such requests to be recorded for Line Manager). This work will be undertaken under the direct supervision of other qualified/experienced staff.
Work as part of a team to provide safe, competent, and comprehensive support to all wards, departments and users of the service, carrying out weekly health and safety checks as per department work plan.
The post holder will be available for Portering/GMS duties in the event of a major incident or in times of need and the post holder will be expected to adapt day to day routines to deal with unexpected situations.
Ability to use own judgement for similar circ*mstances where often there are different outcomes within similar parameters.
Understand safeguarding of children and safeguarding of vulnerable adults.Have basic knowledge of Health & Safety, including COSHH. To have completed a lifting and manual handling course and be experienced in the application of different techniques. Transporting dangerous substances, ensuring that COSHH Regulations are observed and security4 is maintained.
The post holder will follow standard operating policies and procedures of work however they are expected to work for the majority of the shift unsupervised and use their initiative and make decisions regarding prioritising their own workload to deliver the role effectively. Making minor operational decisions about workload and adapt routines to accommodate the needs of the service whilst keeping the Portering coordinator informed.
Recognise, assess, and reduce risk in conflict situations, this might include during emergency procedures e.g., for lockdown, missing person. Follow safe working practices in the prevention of violence and aggression to defuse and de-escalate behaviours that represent risks to safety. Ensuring awareness of all respective risk assessments, and compliance with all associated escalation requirements. Liaising with external organisations during or after a security incident either providing or receiving information.
